Barnsdale Gardens: The Ultimate Blank Canvas Venue

We’re utterly enchanted by Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland, an idyllic and completely blank canvas wedding venue brimming with charm, history and styling potential.

Once the creative garden of the late Geoff Hamilton, the much-loved host of Gardeners’ World, Barnsdale Gardens began life in 1983 on what was once a simple field. Over time, it was lovingly transformed into its current layout: a remarkable collection of 38 individual garden “rooms” spread across eight acres. Today, the gardens are lovingly maintained by Geoff’s son, Nick, and remain a peaceful, inspiring tribute to organic and thoughtful design.

But why should you hold your wedding there?

Ceremony Options to Suit Every Couple

For couples dreaming of a relaxed outdoor ceremony, the purpose-built oak arbour offers a beautifully intimate setting for around 60 guests. Surrounded by vibrant planting it creates a really romantic atmosphere for saying your vows.

Alternatively, you might choose to marry in one of Rutland’s many picturesque churches or even the iconic Normanton Church beside Rutland Water. This secular venue, which we’ve also had the pleasure of styling many times, is just a short drive away and offers dramatic views for a memorable ceremony. From there, Barnsdale Gardens is a wonderful setting for a tranquil and stylish garden reception.

Outdoor Receptions with Total Flexibility

Barnsdale Gardens is a dry-hire venue, giving you complete freedom over your wedding suppliers. Whether you’re planning to pitch a tipi, set up a sailcloth marquee or go for a more classic setup, the venue accommodates it all. The spacious lawn area can easily host up to 120 guests, and with the gardens providing such an atmospheric backdrop, it’s a natural choice for couples who want to create something unique and deeply personal.

Endless Opportunities for Wedding Photography

What truly sets Barnsdale Gardens apart is its stunning variety of settings for photographs. With 38 themed gardens, there is something magical around every corner, from peaceful woodland walks and manicured lawns to the Japanese Garden and even a characterful allotment. Whether you’re capturing intimate couple portraits or group shots with family and friends, the space provides an ever-changing canvas to suit every style. Plus, once the gardens close to the public, it’s all yours to enjoy!

Styling Freedom We Absolutely Love

At Sparkle Event Styling, we love a blank canvas wedding and Barnsdale offers exactly that. We can transform the gardens into a romantic retreat with festoon lighting, draped fabrics and relaxed seating areas. For a more luxurious look, we might style the ceremony arbour with cascading florals or use the garden’s natural textures to create something effortlessly elegant. Whether your vision is modern boho, timeless garden romance or rustic-chic, this space invites creativity.
